Description
Lee Ka-yi is one of a group of Hong Kong players sitting in and around the top 50 in the world rankings, hitting a career high of 39 in September 2022 before acquiring the same ranking in October this year.
Her best performance on the World Tour so far, which also saw Lee back to the career highest ranking, came after the unseeded HongKonger made all the way through to the final of the Open Squash Classic in New York in October. Although she lost the title match to top seed Farida Mohamed of Egypt, it was Lee’s first final in a bronze level tournament.
Her silver medal was also no fluke. Lee upstaged a series of seeded players who were with a higher world ranking to reach the gold medal match. They included Nadine Shahin of Egypt, the world No. 41, Nada Abbas of Egypt, the world No. 14 and Hollie Naughton of Canada, the world No. 26.
Lee broke into the world’s top 40 for the first time in September 2022 and started 2023 just outside that mark. She was in the quarter-finals of the New Zealand Open before the end of the year.
She was a member of the Hong Kong team that clinched a silver medal at the 2023 Asian Games in Hangzhou where she also captured a bronze medal in the mixed doubles with Wong Chi-him.
