(28.08.2014) Cathay Pacific Sun Hung Kai Financial Hong Kong Squash Open 2014 continues to its fifth day and the quarter-finalists for both men’s and women’s events are revealed.
Joey Chan Ho-ling becomes the only home player to reach the quarter finals when she surpassed the 7th seed Egyptian Omneya Abdel Kawy in a straight 11-8, 13-11 and 11-7. Meanwhile the other local hope, the world No.9 Annie Au lost to the former World No.1 Rachael Grinham at 9-11, 11-4, 11-5 and 11-9.
The defending champion Nicol David has been securing her top eight positions in Hong Kong for a decade. Leading the first two games to Emma Beddoes at 11- 4 and 11-6, Nicol lost 8-11 in the third. But the world No. 1 still managed to close the fourth at 11-7. She will meet Joey Chan in the quarters at 1:30pm tomorrow. This would be their second encounter this year after Asian Team Championships Final.
Camille Serme, the runner-up of 2012 Hong Kong Open, and Nour El Tayeb from Egypt both survived in a tough see-saw game. Camille Serme beat the Englishwoman Jenny Duncalf 11-13, 6-11, 11-4, 11-3 and 12-10 while Nour El Tayeb stunned the fifth seed Low Wee Wern at 11-8, 7-11, 11-3, 7-11 and 11-5.
Other quarter-finalists for the women’s event are two Englishwomen, Laura Massaro as well as Alison Waters and the American new comer of the Open, Amanda Sobhy.
For the men’s event, the world No.1 Gregory Gaultier from France dispatched the qualifier Fares Dessouki in a straight. He will meet Daryl Sebly from England in the quarters. Other seeded players also went through to the quarter-finals with no surprise. The seed No.2 Egyptian Mohamed Elshorbagy will meet Peter Barker while Spaniard Borja Golan will meet Nicolas Mueller. Tarek Momen, the giant killer, eliminated James Willstrop, the seed No.3 in the first round also claimed his place in the quarters facing Simon Rosner tomorrow.
The quarter-finals of Cathay Pacific Sun Hung Kai Financial Hong Kong Squash Open 2014 will commence at 1:30pm tomorrow at Hong Kong Squash Centre.
