(31.08.2014) A new portable clear-view squash court was inaugurated yesterday inside the Hong Kong Park Sports Centre to stage this weekend’s semi-finals and finals of Cathay Pacific Sun Hung Kai Financial Hong Kong Squash Open 2014. And a handover ceremony officiated by Mr. David Mui, MH, JP, Chairman of Hong Kong Squash and Ms. Rhoda Chan, Head of Charities Projects, The Hong Kong Jockey Club, was held before the matches started.
The new glass court, made possible by a HK$1.32 million donation from The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust to Hong Kong Squash, will strengthen Hong Kong's ability to host other major international squash tournaments and provide more opportunities for local athletes to participate in the game, ultimately boosting the popularity of squash in the community.
This latest portable court has its doors integrated into the sidewalls and an optimised glass back wall to maximise viewing angles and improve spectators’ enjoyment and help make it more of a spectator sport where large crowds can watch matches at either indoor or outdoor venues. It also features a bright blue wall colour, an improved lighting system, court ventilation and LED marking lines.
The new glass court exceeds current television guidelines and is similar to models that have been used for highest-grade tournaments in Germany, England, Egypt, France and Sweden, as well as in the recent Commonwealth Games in Scotland. A court of this type will also be used for next month's Asian Games in Incheon, Korea.
