(29.08.2014) The four semi-finalists of the Cathay Pacific Sun Hung Kai Financial Hong Kong Squash Open 2014 were decided in the packed Centre Court of Hong Kong Squash Centre today.
Nicol David, the world No. 1 and the eight-time Hong Kong Open Champion, makes a step closer to her 9th title after defeating the home interest, Joey Chan Ho-ling in a straight 11-8,11-4 and 11-3. “Having the support of the home crowd, Joey pushed me hard in the first set with speed and attacks. I am grateful I took back the control in the following sets. She improves everytime. I'm happy for her,” said Nicol.
Amanda Sobhy, currently world ranked at 15th, wowed the audience again with her impressive performance against the 3rd seed, Camille Serme in today's quarter finals. Winning the first game at 11-5 but down 1-11 at the second game, Sobhy came back strong and finished off at 11-7 and 11-3. She will line up against the top seed Nicol David tomorrow at 6pm at the brand new glass court in Hong Kong Park Sports Centre.
The other semi-final of the women’s draw tomorrow will see Laura Massaro and the unseeded player, Nour El Tayeb. Besides Amanda, it is also their first semi-final in the Hong Kong Open.
For the men’s quarter-finals, last year’s runner-up Borja Golan won over Nicolas Mueller in a straight at 11-7,11-9 and 11-7. He will be facing the second seed, Mohamed Elshorbagy who stopped Peter Barker from the quarters in a four games win at 9-11, 11-7,11-9 and 11-3.
The other men’s semis will be between Gregory Gaultier and Tarek Momen. Gregory Gaultier beat Daryl Selby in a straight whereas Tarek Momen has come back from a tough five-set at 7-11, 11-4, 7-11, 11-7 and 11-8 against Simon Rosner.
The semis and finals of Cathay Pacific Sun Hung Kai Financial Hong Kong Squash Open 2014 will move to the brand new glass court at Hong Kong Park Sports Centre. The matches will start from 4pm onwards. All the prime seats tickets have been sold out. If you would like to watch your favourites play on court, come and purchase the limited general seats tickets as soon as possible.
